I've never played a game in the Far Cry series, though was always intrigued by their much-talked-about open worlds. I wasn't planning on buying Far Cry 5, however, with the mediocre Sea of Thieves reviews, I decided to look elsewhere, and the stellar reviews of the newest Far Cry entry convinced me to give it a try.
I want to start by stating how gorgeous this game looks. It's always towards the end of the product life cycle of these consoles that the beautiful games come out. I remember how amazing Bioshock Infinite looked when it came out about six months before the Xbox One launched. I get the same feeling with Far Cry 5. It's the best looking game I've played on the Xbox One.
I've played a few hours and am impressed with every aspect so far. The weapons system is easy to learn. The story is well established and clever. The characters are intriguing, especially the antagonist. The opening scenario is intense, and sucks you right in. Whether it's fighting bizarre cult members or a moose, the combat is fun.
I don't want to spend endless hours shooting through this game as quickly as possible, so I'm going to pace myself. I'm sure the game's flaws will become apparent with time. But for now, I'm so glad I bought it. Far Cry 5 is a great looking game that's a blast to play. I expect to buy an Xbox One X when Red Dead 2 comes out in October. I can't wait to see what Far Cry looks like on the new box.
